KEY TOPIC HIGHLIGHTED IN BLUE
WHY DOESN’T THE IPL RECOGNIZE THE PRO STATUS OF ATHLETES FROM OTHER FEDERATIONS? The IPL has ushered in a new era of Physique Competition. Our divisions are particular, our judging and scoring are unique, our drug testing is more intensive. With all the federations that exist today (there are over 50) it would be impossible to investigate all of the parameters under which athletes were granted Professional status. Therefore, all athletes must go through the ranks of the IPL in order to achieve IPL Pro status.
IF I COMPETE WITHIN THE IPL OR WIN MY IPL PRO CARD WILL I BE ABLE TO COMPETE WITH OTHER FEDERATIONS AS WELL? The IPL will never impose rules that limit where athletes can compete.
WHY DOESN’T THE IPL OFFER “WOMEN’S PHYSIQUE?” In the IPL “Physique” is not a division. Instead, “Physique” encompasses the entire the sport. Along these same lines, in the IPL, “Bodybuilding” is not the sport. “Bodybuilding” is a division of Physique competition. In the IPL “Women’s Bodybuilding” has merged “Bodybuilding” with what is referred to as “Physique.”
I SEE THAT THE IPL DOES HOST A YEAR-END CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT. WHY IS IT NOT CALLED A “WORLD” CHAMPIONSHIP. I REALLY LIKE THE IDEA OF HAVING THE CHANCE TO BE A WORLD CHAMPION. The IPL does host a year-end event, called the IPL APEX. This is not only a Physique contest, but also an Expo. The reason that we do not refer to our year-end event as a “World Championship” is because we feel that there should actually be athletes competing from all over the world in order to have a “World Championship.” We will affix the “World” title to the show in the event that we have at lease one athlete from at least 6 of the 7 world continents.
I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO COMPETE IN EVENING GOWN AND I AM REALLY EXCITED ABOUT IT BEING ITS OWN SEPARATE DIVISION. MY ONLY CONCERN IS ABOUT THE COST OF THE GOWNS. I HAVE HEARD OF GIRLS SPENDING $600 TO $1,200 FOR COMPETITION GOWNS. IS THIS ACCURATE? HONESTLY, THE COST OF THE GOWNS WOULD BE THE ONLY THING KEEPING ME FROM COMPETING IN THIS DIVISION. Gowns for the IPL Evening Gown division do not need to be pricey. The truth is, a regulation gown can actually cost much less (even half) what competition suits cost.
WHY MUST THE ROUTINES BE JUDGED? MY CLIENTS ALMOST NEVER DO SHOWS WHERE POSING ROUTINES ARE JUDGED. THEY ACTUALLY SEEK OUT SHOWS WHERE NOT ONLY ARE ROUTINES NOT JUDGED, BUT THEY CAN EVEN OPT OUT OF DOING ONE ENTIRELY. OUR SPORT IS ALREADY SUBJECTIVE ENOUGH AND ADDING WHAT IS ESSENTIALLY A DANCE ROUTINE WILL ONLY INCREASE THE SUBJECTIVITY IN THE JUDGING. I WOULD FEEL TERRIBLE IF THE JUDGES HAD MYSELF NARROWLY WINNING BASED ON MY PHYSIQUE AND THEN ANOTHER PERSON OVERTAKES ME BASED ON MY ROUTINE. Firstly, only the top 5 will perform a routine at the Finals. And yes, the routine can determine the winner if the scores are close going into the Finals. In the IPL the routines and walks are viewed as worthy components of Physique Competition. We are a sports league and feel that the routines and walks offer an important and exciting element to the contest. That being said, the routines do not need to be fancy or dancy. The only requirement is that the athlete displays their physique adequately to 60 seconds of music. Actually, an athlete who chooses to perform only dance moves during a routine and does not actually perform poses which clearly display their physique will lose points.
IF COMPETITORS ARE SCORED FROM 1 TO 10 DURING PRE-JUDGING WHY WOULD THERE NEED TO BE COMPARISONS AND MOVING ATHLETES AROUND IN A LINE-UP? Even though the IPL scoring system is unique (athletes receive scores from 1 to 10 for each judging round) the scores will still be relative to the other competitors. For example, a judge may feel that competitor A has great conditioning (leanness) and want to score them a 9. However, when comparing to the other athletes in the line-up it may become clear that competitor B is significantly more conditioned. So, upon seeing competitor B the judge may realize that competitor A is actually closer to a 7.
I ASSUME A COMPETITOR WHO ENTERS MULTIPLE DIVISIONS MAY RECEIVE VARYING (EVEN CONFLICTING) SCORES FROM DIVISION TO DIVISION. CONSIDERING THAT THIS IS THE SAME PERSON IN FRONT OF THE SAME JUDGES, HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? Factors that may effect the varying scores include an competitor’s look relative to the others in each division, their specific suit for each division, posing/presentation etc…
WITH THE IPL’S SCORING SYSTEM (SCORING ATHLETES FROM 1 TO 10 IN THE VARIOUS ROUNDS AS OPPOSED TO GIVING THEM ACTUAL PLACEMENTS) WON’T THERE BE A HIGH PROBABILITY OF TIE SCORES? AND WHAT IS DONE IN THE EVENT OF A TIE? Yes, with the IPL judging and scoring system the probability of tie-scores may be higher than with other systems. The occurrence of a tie will be revealed and announced at the evening show finals. The judges will “place” the tied competitors while in the evening show line up. It will be a nail biter.
FOR THE EVENING GOWN DIVISION, IF SOMEONE ENTERS BOTH OPEN AND MASTERS CLASSES DO THEY NEED TWO GOWNS OR ONE? One gown. Keep in mind that these don’t need to be $800 gowns. The cost of gowns is not important. What matters here is that the gown looks amazing, and more importantly the competitor looks amazing in it and the gown showcases, highlights, and accentuates their physique.
WOULD I NEED A DIFFERENT SUIT FOR EACH DIVISION I CROSS-OVER INTO? A different suit must be worn for each division you enter. For example, Figure and Bikini. (*this applies to both Men & Women for ALL divisions). This does not apply to classes within the divisions. For example, a competitor may compete in a Novice and Open Class within the same division (Bikini, for instance) wearing the same suit.
AS A BODYBUILDER WHY ARE MY POSING TRUNKS JUDGED? ONCE AGAIN, ANOTHER LAYER OF SUBJECTIVITY. WHO IS TO SAY WHAT IS THE RIGHT POSING SUIT FOR THE RIGHT PERSON? ONE JUDGE MAY LIKE A SUIT AND ANOTHER JUDGE MAY HATE IT. We are working to bring our sport, the legitimate drug-tested side, deeper into the mainstream and the media. We are aiming to showcase the sport in a crisp way. So, Bodybuilders (as well as all other divisions) will want to pay attention to their trunks. Where can a competitor go wrong? Examples would be wearing distracting florescent yellow trunks at pre-judging or ill-fitting trunks. Truth be told, in most federations, an athlete may be marked down due to an issue with their trunks but may never be informed of this. With the IPL scoring system this, as well as every other score, will be clear and transparent.
IN MEN’S ATHLETIC, CAN WE DO A 60 SECOND BODYBUILDING ROUTINE WITH OUR PROVIDED MUSIC ASSUMING WE MAKE IT TO THE TOP 5? OR ARE WE SUPPOSED TO JUST DO THE STANDARD T-WALK AND STANDARD POSES? I JUST DON’T WANT TO BE COUNTED DOWN FOR SOMETHING I DO. I LOVE DOING THE ROUTINES FOR BODYBUILDING… Only the standard Men’s Athletic poses are permitted. We are really making an attempt to draw a clear line between each division. We aim to present each division as totally unique and distinct from the others.
