THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT WAS ISSUED ON 10.24.15 BY BEN YOSEF, IPL FOUNDER & PRESIDENT, IN RESPONSE TO AN IPL ATHLETE TESTING POSITIVE FOR A BANNED SUBSTANCE
“I am saddened by the recent positive test result following our 2015 Midwest Championship contest. The IPL utilizes the most stringent drug-testing protocol in Physique Competition. This not only includes using only World Anti-doping Agency (WADA) testing labs, which are the most thorough and test for the largest number of substances, but also using third-party, independent, Certified Urine Sample Collectors in order to insure razor-sharp chain-of-custody when it comes to handling the samples.
We have been announcing and celebrating news of our athletes who have passed the drug-tests since our first contest in August of this year and now must announce this unfortunate news.
Darin Steen is a high-profile athlete and a health & fitness leader who, for many years, has been a very vocal proponent of the ‘natural’ drug-free way in our sport as well as in life general. So, I was especially shocked to learn that Darin tested positive for Ephedrine which is classified by (WADA) as a “S6 Stimulant” and is Prohibited In-Competition.
As for Darin’s penalty, we firmly believe that we must set an example and make sure the message is clear that we are very serious about drug-testing and following through on penalties for athletes who test positive for banned substances. We feel that a one-year suspension is appropriate in Darin’s case, effective immediately. In addition, his status as an IPL Pro has been revoked as well as his placings at the 2015 Midwest Championship (Men’s Bodybuilding Open & Masters (40+) . We wish Darin well and will welcome him back into the IPL as an Amateur competitor this time next year if he chooses to return.”
In response to what has transpired, Darin Steen issued the following statement:
“As most of you know, I take great pride in role modeling the benefits of a fitness lifestyle for others. I have always played by the rules as a drug & hormone free for life athlete and that is a major reason why I support Ben and the IPL’s stricter drug-testing procedures. I did not knowingly take ephedrine or any drug or hormone in prep for this contest. In fact, I passed a lie detector the following week for a different organization.
I did consume caffiene with a couple different pre-workouts (no Ephedra or Ephedrine listed on products) the last couple months before my contest to help me push through the calorie deprivation. I just saw that GNC is being sued for lacing several fat burners with amphetamines. I never really believed that this could be true, but my recent experience with having a banned stimulant in my system leads me to think otherwise.”
Darin Steen is currently featured (with fellow competitor Patricia Gaffney) as the cover story for the upcoming October/ November issue of NATURALMAG, leading fitness magazine, which celebrates drug-tested Physique Athletes. MiBoLife Publishing, the company that owns the magazine and the International Physique League, issued the following statement:
“We were very surprised to hear the news about Darin Steen. With regards to the NATURALMAG issue, we are a news media company for the drug-tested side of Physique Competition and this is surely news. We will continue developing the October/November issue as planned and look forward to sharing Darin’s story.”
