SECOND IPL ATHLETE TESTS POSITIVE FOR BANNED SUBSTANCE

THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT WAS ISSUED ON 11.12.15 BY BEN YOSEF, IPL FOUNDER & PRESIDENT, IN RESPONSE TO SECOND ATHLETE TESTING POSITIVE FOR BANNED SUBSTANCE

“I am once again saddened by a positive test result, this time following our 2015 Southern Championship contest. The IPL utilizes the most stringent drug-testing protocol in Physique Competition. This not only includes using only World Anti-doping Agency (WADA) testing labs, which are the most thorough and test for the largest number of substances, but also using third-party, independent, Certified Urine Sample Collectors in order to insure razor-sharp chain-of-custody when it comes to handling the samples.

Men’s Athletic Open & Masters (40+) and Pro Qualified winner, John Mitchell, tested positive for Furosemide, a substance classified by WADA as an “S5” substance under “Diuretics and Masking Agents” and is prohibited for use at all times. As a result, John has been placed on Athlete Suspension.

Because of the ‘intent’ typically found with the use of this substance, its pharmaceutical nature, and its severity/danger, testing positive for it comes with a 5-year suspension from competing within the IPL and any other United Physique Competitors Association (UPCA) member organizations. In addition, John’s status as an IPL Pro has been revoked as well as his placings at the 2015 Southern Championship contest. We wish John well and will welcome him back into the IPL as an Amateur competitor in 2020 if he chooses to return.”

In response to what has transpired, John Mitchell issued the following statement:

“Unfortunately after competing in the IPL Southern Championship on October 3rd I was informed that my drug test came back positive. I was taking water pills that, unknowingly, contained Furosemide. Apparently this is a dangerous substance and I was not aware of the damage these pills could cause. My deepest apologies to Ben and the IPL family. I have the utmost respect for you guys.”
